ION Neo Cosy Coats At The Watersports Centre
There’s so much more to neoprene than just wetsuits. Neo accessories including gloves, boots, and jackets are now common place in the market and are a great accessory to help keep any water enthusiast warm on and off the water. The Watesports Centre team have taken a look at and have been testing the 2021 Neo Cosy Coat Core and the and the Neo Cosy Coat Amp jackets from ION which have been designed for use all year round on the beach and whilst kiting or Stand Up Paddling.
ION, the brand.
ION is a brand that is run by passionate people whose big love has always been watersports.” ION develops gear that is not only smart and innovative, but also transforms this passion into a unique design. Originally launched as a watersports brand in 2004, focusing on wetsuits and neoprene products, ION then expanded to include accessories, apparel.

The Range
There are two Neo Cosy Coats. One is the ION Neo Cosy Coat Core and the other is the ION Neo Cosy Coat Amp. The Core is the mid tier level and the Amp is the higher specification jacket with Hot_Stuff 2.0 lining. The Hot_Stuff 2.0 is a plushier feel due to larger loops that trap more air for heat insulation and is the stretchiest thermo lining in ION’s entire range. Although oddly, both retail for the same price at £149.95!
Both the ION Neo Cosy Coat Core and the ION Neo Cosy Coat Amp are made from 2.5mm thick neoprene. The ION Neo Cosy Coat Core comes in Dirty Rose/Steel blue. The ION Neo Cosy Coat Amp comes in Blue Capsule which is mainly dark blue with a Blue Capsule hood, shoulders and arms and both are available in 4 sizes, 36/S (UK size 8), 38/M (UK size 10), 40/L (UK size 12), 42/XL (UK size 14).
Both the Neo Cosy Coat Core and the Neo Cosy Coat Amp are 3/4 length jackets designed, as with all the neoprene accessories to “protect you and keep you warm.”
Made from Neoprene they can be used over your wetsuit when back on the beach to warm up after a kitesurf, surf or SUP session or help keep you warm during sessions. Designed to get wet, they also make the perfect extra layer to take with you on your board on those longer paddle sessions or when kiting. No need to worry about it getting wet or finding room in your dry bag for extra layers.
Our Verdict
The ION Neo Cosy Coat Core andthe ION Neo Cosy Coat Amp in both versions are excellent quality and well designed.
The Dirty Rose/Steel blue on the Neo Cosy Coat Core and theBlue Capsule Neo Cosy Coat Amp gives both coats a stylish look and the good cut, mid thigh length and soft insides of both makes the coats feel just as the name suggests… cosy! The long sleeves with shaped cuffs provide great wind protection on your hands, and the velcro fastenings on the cuffs allows them to be easily shortened if required.
Both coats have 2 generous deep zipped pockets, one of which contains a useful key loop, are the perfect size for warming up your hands or keeping small essentials safe. When zipped up fully the coat has a nice high neck and a good fitting generous sized hood with toggle tighteners and a small rain peak. The hood is well designed and easy to adjust, providing excellent wind and rain protection whilst also maintaining good visibility and positioning when used kiteurfing or paddling. The coats and hoods are very comfortable and do not hinder your kitesurfing or paddling movements when the correct size is worn. A harness hook opening at the front of the jacket means it really is an all round watersports coat designed to fit snuggly around/over a kitesurfers or windsurfers harness, as well as being the ideal kiters, SUPers, surfers Neo accessory.
Just like any neoprene garment it’s designed to get wet, just remember to rinse it with fresh water regularly to speed up the drying process and help preserve the fabric. Even after a few months use, the ION Neo Cosy Coats tested still look and feel new.
They’re not cheap, but the ION Neo Cosy Coat in both the Core and Amp versions are one of those items that once you get one, you’ll wonder how you ever managed without it! Comfy and “cosy”, they’re great accessories which certainly help keep you warm on and off the water, and makes kiting, SUPing and surfing all year round that much more enjoyable and there’s no doubt your friends will be asking to borrow it next time you’re at the beach!
