The Ozone Wasp V2 Review

Testing The Wing

Ozone have concentrated on making the WASP V2 easy to fly and handle. The large size Leading Edge creates stability and reduces flex and also helps develop power at low speeds to get you moving sooner. The enlarged centre strut provides direct angle of attack control and as flex is minimal this offers a solid and controlled feeling.

With a lower aspect ratio you get a wing that has grunt when you need it and less likely to catch the water. The wing tips have a layer of scuff protection for riding on snow or land, although it’s always best to keep the wing off the ground!

Multiple Power Handles on the Leading Edge and Strut have been positioned to cover many options providing maximum control and comfort while riding. The streamline De-Power Handle at the front of the Leading Edge completely de-powers the wing for total control when carving downwind in swell or when carrying the wing.

The Ozone Wasp V2 features a larger diameter leading edge and boom with a medium camber canopy that delivers a solid mix between low-end power and good upwind ability. This wing inflates with Ozone’s large diameter Boston valve which requires a standard hose attachment that comes with most pumps. The Wasp comes with three handles on the leading edge with one fore and aft and two set diagonally with fours traps along the main strut.

The Wasp offers lots of handle options that at first might seem excessive and confusing but as you spend more time handling the wing with the new design you can feel the real advantages of handles.

On testing we started using our front hand on the lower diagonal and that established a better balance point that might have increased both the steadiness of the wing and the upwind angle. The diagonal handles allow you to fine-tune exactly the pivot point between your two hands and the wing’s angle of attack. Move your hand along the strap an inch or so and you could find the magic spot. By moving your back arm one handle back you can spread your arms in multiple increments wider and this straightens out your back sheeting arm. This can be important because keeping a straight arm on long tacks means you won’t suffer the same fatigue you’d get if your arms are bent.

Overall: A great wing !

The new V2 bag looks cool in “Army green” and is a one strap backpack with plenty enough space.

Although the Wasp v2 has windows, the backpack (and wing folded) is still small in comparison with some other brands that have windows in the wings. The windows do not seem to give the wing any noticeable extra weight. The windows worked nicely when up on the foil.

Pumping up the wing you need to pump up the leading edge and the strut separately as the wing is not a one pump system, so hey, getting on to the water take a little bit longer.

The handles feel really comfortable and sturdy and there is some comfy padding around making them a bit thicker. It has one front handle with a V-strap and 3 handles for the rear hand.

The Ozone V2 Wasp comes with a non coiled waist leash. There are pros and cons with any Wing leash. A wrist leash can be easier to manage the wing when first getting up on the board. On the other hand (excuse the pun) you need to decide which wrist to attach it to and often feels that it needs to have been on the other one.

A waist leash enables you to keep your hands free of any leash and also enables you to attach the board leash to it too. Everyone will have a preference. The answer is to try both and see how you get on!
